Versace: Little Black Dreams

Whenever somebody talks about Italian fashion, three labels pop into my mind immediately: Gucci, Armani and Versace. Now, I’ve already spoken about Gucci and Armani, so it’s about time to complete the holly triad with a post dedicated to Gianni Versace’s legacy. Why hadn’t I written about it yet? Because, to be honest, I didn’t like their haute couture fall/winter 2012-13 collection (Sorry!). The thing was that the colors used at their designs were too bright for the season. I know fall/winter isn’t synonym of opacity, but it’s certainly necessary.

1) Look A

Why? Well, have you noticed how when it’s really hot wearing dark colors makes us feel like we’re getting cooked? That’s because dark colors absorb light, which goes through a process I’m totally unfamiliar with that ends up turning luminosity into heat. What most of us want during fall and winter is to be nicely warm, right? Unless you live on the southern part of the hemisphere where there’s sun and fun, which makes Versace’s fall/winter haute couture collection perfect for you. Bright colors reflect the light, so it doesn’t capture it and no extra energy is heating up our bodies.

2) Look B

The comical thing is that Versace’s prêt-à-porter fall/winter 2012-13 collection is based on a dark palette, mainly black, one of my favorite colors. I know we’ve been checking out Summer-Spring 2013 collections, but the weather has become really cold lately and I thought, “I love all new collections, but this climate inspires me to write about fall/winter instead.” And so I’m doing. Here’s my Top Three from Versace’s prêt –à-porter fall/winter 2012-13 creations:

3) Look C

1) Look A. Simple but complex at the same time; futuristic yet classic; bright and dark at the same time: a complete paradox. The cut of the dress is pretty simple, what makes the garment a real something is the detail on the upper part of the outfit, that silver horseshoe shaped detail. What is it that makes it great? This bright thing reflects the light into our faces, eliminating shades and therefore, making us look younger. As we can see, the rest of it is black, which every woman knows helps us to appear to be thinner. The plus here is that the faux metal feature on top outlines the figure, so when we see the person wearing we focus on the darkest part and our brain thinks: ”Oh! That’s a really teeny tinny body.” Another thing, see where the horseshoe-like element ends? Right under the ribs, right before the waist. What does this do? Generate the illusion of a longer torso, a leaner body and a smaller waist. 

2) Look B. Another paradox. The cut is traditional, the faux metal downward “T” is the modern touch that revolutions the whole outfit. The horizontal light colored line is in the same place the horseshoe detail of the previous dress ended, see? It has the same purpose: leaner body, taller woman, smaller waist. The vertical line right in the middle of the chest divides it into three perfectly equal parts. Vertical lines will always make you look taller and thinner, specially if it’s only one in the middle, because it cuts you into two and instead of seeing one full-size bloc, we see two little ones.

3) Look C. This piece leans more to modernity than to classics, even though the cut is, like in the previous dresses, traditional. The neckline is wide and goes a long way down, which could make the upper part of your body look bigger than it actually is. The details that define the waist and go from the lower half of the breasts right to the hips delineate and redefine the shape of our body, creating curves even if they’re not there. See how they outstand at their ends (upper and lower)? That’s because the metallic edges, being so bright and out, make the breasts look bigger and the hips look wider.

What has Versace taught us today? That it takes one meaningful and unique thing to revolution your whole image and transmit your essence. Have you found it yet?

Louboutin and Louis Vuitton: Not the same at all!

Throughout my life I’ve crashed into very fashionably confused people, which is normal, right? I mean, I don’t know a thing about physics and that’s cool too (right?). You may be thinking, “Alana, you’re crazy! Physics and fashion cannot be compared! Fashion is a natural thing!” Well, babies, so is Physics and I barely know its basics thanks to middle and high school. The thing is that, believe it or not, many people find fashion harder to understand than pure sciences, because while they have all these complicated formulas, we have all these terms and fancy designers most people find hard to pronounce and even worst, distinguish.

Confusions happen all the time. If you go back to August in this very same blog, you’ll find a post of the most common confusion ever:  Gucci and Pucci. Today I’ve decided to write about another one that makes my heart ache every single time: Louboutin and Louis Vuitton. Yes, maybe written they seem super different, but go on and pronounce them! If your French is quite raw, you might mistake one for another, and that’s a “No! No!”

It is normal, I mean, let’s not be mean about this. If we know how to tell apart one from another, let’s spread the knowledge! And maybe some day some time, somebody will help us understand more Physics than “everything tends to fall downwards”.

Ok, so what do we need to know? For starters, yes, they’re both French, but Louis Vuitton produces clothing, shoes, accessories and traveling cases, the last ones being their specialty since that’s how they started. The founder, Louis Vuitton, was known to produce the best baggage ever; he even worked for Napoleon the III! Louis Vuitton died in 1892 and his empire is now creatively directed by our dearly loved Marc Jacobs. Christian Louboutin, on the other hand, dedicates exclusively to footwear and still designs for his brand since he’s just about 49. Louis Vuitton signature is their monogram, while Louboutin’s is the red-lacquered sole in every creation of his.

Styles? Poles apart.

Louboutin goes beyond our imagination, he’s all about innovation and edginess. Metal or jewelry applications, flashy colors, feathers, animal print and lacquer are only some of the few incorporations to his works of art. He doesn’t fear heels height or shapes, nor textures or conventions. My favorites from his collection were the following: (I know they’re pretty sober, but believe me, they’re by far the soberer on the catalogue and well, yeah, I’m pretty classic.)

Louis Vuitton is pretty conservative and sometimes, too sober for my taste, but’s got pretty amazing stuff (for example, the boots I’m showing you guys). My main concern about wearing any Louis Vuitton garment is that you risk looking plus agée (French for “older”) than you really are. Here, I picked up my favorite shoes from this fall/winter 2012-13. I chose to display some of their footwear as well so you can see that even in the same area, they’re pretty different.

So what do you think? It’s quite clear that as similar as they might be phonetically, they’re opposites when materialized. Remember, next time you’re talking about Louboutin or Louis Vuitton and someone asks you the difference, well, you know what to answer.

Quick Post: Hatters gonna love

Brrr! It’s fall already and winter is rapidly approaching! You know what they say, be “cold headed”, but hey! Nobody wants its brain frozen, that’s why you have to protect it. How? With a hat, of course! But remember, not any kind of hat! This is an opportunity to boost your style, so take it and make it right!

Oh! Don’t worry; I will walk you through it! Here’s my Top Three:

Dior: L’Haute Couture has never been so neat

So, it’s been a while since we have spoken about Haute Couture, and I know I said I would stick to Summer-Spring 2013 but it’s just that I can’t possibly go on to the next season without talking about Christian Dior. I mean, let’s just be honest, when someone says “French Maisons” what do you think about? Yes, Chanel and Dior.

As a matter of fact, those two marked the beginning of fashion as we know it today, always honoring one of the main commandments in the industry: simple is better. “Oh! But we have talked a lot about designers mixing textures and styles in a very Baroque way!” Well, yes, rules were meant to be broken, but here’s the thing, you just don’t go ahead and break them, you have to know how to do so. As in pretty much everything, we have three groups on the field: the conservatives, the moderates and the liberals.

Obviously, do to the constant changes in today’s world, the liberals have the biggest number of designers enrolled, why? Because there are so many tendencies somebody has to cover, it would be a total waste to leave the public unattended. Of course, some of us are more, well, “old fashioned”. Some people will always need something timeless, and as we all know, the only ones that can fit in the profile are classics.

I must admit that another thing that kept me from writing about Dior was the scandal they had with their previous creative director: John Galliano, whose anti-Semitic attitude won him out of the Maison. I didn’t know what to expect from the new designer on board, Raf Simons, since I somehow picture the departure (very justified departure) of Galliano as Lagerfeld leaving Chanel. But clearly my fears had to reason to be, because Dior as a whole knew what it was doing, and Raf Simons is taking us back to the designs of the very founder of his kingdom: Christian Dior.

Christian Dior believed the clothes would help a woman stand out only if she had the right attitude, I mean, it’s such a shame when the clothes end up wearing you instead of being the other way around! Designers as Dior or Chanel wanted the person itself to be the focus of attention, not what they were wearing, the clothes just have to pump our personality, not overshadow it.

Wooh! I that was a long introduction, but hey! You had to know the context! Now, are you ready to see Dior’s newborns? Here, from the Haute Couture Fall- Winter 20120-2013 collection of Christian Dior, we have my Top Three.

1) Look A

1) Look A. Talking about timeless… look at that! And of course, it had to be black, the true color. Tell me if you wouldn’t look at yourself in the mirror while wearing this and say: “Mirror mirror, on the wall, who’s the classiest of them all?” There certainly is no-need for an answer when a picture is worth a thousand words. The long V cleavage matches perfectly with the open cut of the pleated skirt. It’s versatile and will never let you down. The black long sleeves that practically act as a second skin stylize the arms, and the cut just under the ribs help dissimulate your belly if any. There’s no texture and the thickness of the fabric makes it even more uniform. Perfect. Want to look like Grace Kelly, anyone?

2) Look B

2) Look B. My God! Look at that beautiful skirt! I love every waist-high cut, because it doesn’t just make you look taller, it also makes you look slimmer. The “thinner” effect is strongly supported by the puffiness of the skirt, which makes the upper part look teeny tiny.  The texture, color selection and pattern of the skirt make you think you don’t need anything else but a plain pair of shoes and a plain t-shirt; and well, that thought would be accurate, look at the outfit! The t-shirt is very delicate and generic. The fabric? I’d dare to say is silk, but I’m not so sure.

3) Look C

3) Look C. This was the star of the collection, and what a star! Shining brighter than the sun, huh? Again, long sleeves. The upper part of this dress is pretty much the same as the upper part of the previous look. ¿The lower part? Pretty much as the first look, but longer. Yellow is one of my favorite colors, but you have to be careful when wearing it, because well, brighter colors can make your body look bigger than it really is. Especially this dress, so tight at the waist, shouldn’t be worn by anyone who hasn’t got plain abs. Has it been black, like the first one, well, you might trick the audience, but with such color, no way.

So, what do you think? Has Raf Simons honored Christian Dior’s name? Totally. As you saw, all the pieces were eternal, completely immune to any trends or fashions; they’ve got a style of their own that know how to compliment any woman. Compliment and complement, because remember, fashion is a mere accessory to your personality and it helps you define yourself only if you have something to define.

Quick Post: Put yourself in their OMG Shoes

So, I had some free time today and I was thinking, “God! I haven’t posted anything about shoes yet!” and so, I decided to write a quick post about the shoes of this season that, according to me, are authentic pieces of art. This is the Top Three of the Most Exquisite Pieces of Footwear a.k.a. shoes:

1) "Cedar" by Jimmy Choo

1) “Cedar”, by Jimmy Choo. Generally I’m not a big fan of animal print because it tends to look cheesy, but oh, wow! Jimmy Choo just made me swallow my prejudices with this pair of super classy printed pony pumps. Yes, pony, like, they used pony hair to make them; that I personally dislike, but hopefully they have a version that doesn’t involve something else’s hair. I love the strips on top; they make you ankles look narrower. The colors are perfect, because black and white never die and they match pretty much everything. Heel high? 12 cm.

2) "Decorapump" by Christian Louboutin

2) “Decorapump”, by Christian Louboutin. “Gaga? You there? I found you some shoes for your sober outfit!” No, really, they’re WOWing: rocker yet classic, just perfect. Gaga may wear them for office meetings, but us, well, let’s keep them for any informal outing after 12 p.m. If you want to fancy them a little, wear them with a long dress, yes, long dress. With short dresses is harder, you don’t want to look like a, well, you know. Heel high? 16 cm.

2) "Vulgara" by Manolo Blahnik

3) “Vulgara”, by Manolo Blahnik. When I first saw this pair, I thought I was going to faint. Look at this, I mean, they should be inside a shelf at MoMA! Look at the patterns so carefully traced and the texture and the unusual glow and the silhouette! I don’t know if I’d dare to wear them, quite honestly. It would hurt my heart using something so beautiful where nobody could admire their exquisiteness. If you’re using shoes this complex, keep it simple with your outfit, so your clothing don’t take over your beautiful footwear.

Jean Paul Gaultier- L’Enfant Terrible is here to steal the spotlight

Why Jean Paul Gaultier? The real question is why did I wait until now for Jean Paul Gaultier?! This grand couturier has dressed personalities such as Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard and Lady Gaga, and I must admit the last celebrity is the actual reason I dedicated this week’s post to l’enfant terrible.

1) Look A

You see, last Sunday I was watching E! and some TV show comparing Gaga’s and Madonna’s styles popped up. Towards the ending, they showed Gaga in a beautiful JPG gown, all black with a gorgeous collar with golden details and huge feathers framing Gaga’s face. It was outstanding, you know why? Because it was classy yet risky and gothic at the same time. I really believe it has been the best outfit Gaga has come out with ever, and believe me, I’m a huge fan of hers and, of course, of clothing. Anyway, then I remembered when I was checking out the new prêt-à-porter fall-winter 2012-2013 at Vogue.fr, the first post was dedicated to him, which I totally should have interpreted as a sign to write about him ASAP!

But oh, well! No more “What ifs”! Let’s cut the blah blah blah and start with what we all care about: The Top Three.

2) Look B

1) Look A. Is that a dress? No! it’s a black velvet jumpsuit with a faux heart neckline that’s got covered the rest of the chest up to the neck and most of the arms with an extraordinarily vaporous fabric. Don’t you love the effect? It makes the femme fatale outfit actually pretty classy! It gives a sort of black wings to the model. Gaultier is an expert on making glam black angels. Jumpsuits are generally pretty good on making you look taller and slimmer, no mention the little black vest reduces the amount of clothing seen underneath and makes you look thinner still (if you have a little waist, if not, use a longer vest, one that finishes right at the hips). See the big necklace? Stay away of those unless you have a long neck, otherwise it will disappears and the neck is one of the most beautiful characteristics of human beings.

2) Look B. What a dress, ladies (& gentlemen, if any)! Transparencies, transparencies everywhere! I love the contrast of textures and the iridescence of the fabric! The color lies somewhere between a dark-greenish blue and a yellowish green, and though I’ve never seen it before, I think it’s a perfect fit for this season, don’t you? The imperial cut (tighter right in the middle of the ribs, under the breasts) makes the skirt fall beautifully, due, in part to the lightness of the material used on its making. This kind of dress favors almost any women. Do you see what he did with the sleeves? How they’re a little bit more open? Well, it serves the purpose of making the arms look thinner and longer. The geometry employed on the design is delightful and, in a way, adds symmetry to the body, which, believe it or not, potentiates our beauty (or so its said).

3) Look C. Talking about geometry, look at that! Transparencies and black and velvet and leather: Gaultier (if you have any questions, look at the pattern right where the legs begin, you’ll see his name written pretty clearly). What can I say about this work of art? Maybe just, if you’re planning on wearing it outside a gala or a red carpet, you should probably put something underneath; I mean, it’s a little bit too much skin. Oh! Just not something black, please! Wear something salmon or peach or nude or yellow, it’ll look way better. Even white or gray are acceptable, just stay away from black because you’ll totally mess up the details. The triangles upside down help the upper part of the body look longer, and the velvet at the end of the skirt is a faux end, so it actually looks shorter than it is. The section of the chest is perfect, because it sobers up the whole thing.

So, now you know! Whenever you want to steal the spotlight and look like Marilyn Monroe in her rock star mode, go for Gaultier! I’m crazy about his designs and his outrageous style, what about you?

Isabel Marant: Westerns are back… in Paris

September is already here, do you know what that means? You'd better get ready for fall!!! The first entry of this month is going to be dedicated to westerns, why? Keep reading!

Honestly speaking, I’ve never been a fan of westerns, probably because to me they’re foreign and I take them as part of the folklore of another country. Say for example, when someone says the word “Western” what comes to my mind are cowboys, so that’s pretty much why I chose this title for today’s post. Isabel Marant’s Fall-Winter 2012-2013 takes us back to those characteristic landscapes where duels took place and checked chemises and boots ruled the place.

1) Look A

Isabel Marant is relatively new in the business, and it’s a little bit more relaxed than the rest of the designers, mainly because she doesn’t work with haute couture; even though this is prêt-à-porter, it can be considered as way too relaxed compared to other maisons.

Anyway, we don’t always have to be all fancied, we could also wear more comfortable clothes and still look super fashionable. Wait! Comfortable and fashionable? Well, yes, it is possible. Don’t believe me? Take a look to Isabel Maran’ts top three!

2) Look B

1) Look A. Didn’t I tell you? Totally western. This look, composed by a white blouse, a white skirt and a blue & gold patterned belt is super simple and super comfy. Advantages? You can wear this almost anywhere in daytime! At school, at Starbucks, at SoHo… The embroidering on the blouse is beautiful (don’t you love the heart in the middle of it), and of course, the star of this season’s prêt-à-porter: transparencies. The skirt is actually very casual and the design isn’t complicated, the special thing about THIS skirt is that it is made of silk, which makes it compliment our movement, making us look more graceful.

2) Look B. More western! I’m in love with the white silk chemise. The pattern made out of applications is elegant and stylizes the figure, how? Well, see how it sort of outlines the upper part of the chest? There’s a sort of cleavage included, and remember what I always say, division lines on your outfit make you look taller and thinner. Also, the line that divides the torso helps us to look fitter. The black leather skinny pants help your legs look longer and much more defined. This, as well the skirt on the previous look and the golden belt on this one, is easy to find at any mall if you know where to look for it.

3) Look C. The Western Queen. So far we had observed only daytime outfits, but what do you think about this alternative version of “the little black dress”? I say, “Yes, please”. It’s got some golden embroidery and applications that make a faux cleavage that elongates our torso. The high of the skirt makes the model’s legs look longer and makes her look even taller. Just remember! When wearing something this short, please don’t wear heels! It might look distasteful and that’s a big “No! No!”

I think what I really like about Isabel Marant is that her looks aren’t complicated at all, and for all the fashionistas on training, it is an easy style to follow, since she uses pretty simple clothes. What do you think? Will you bring the Western back to your closet? I’m already on it!

Paco Rabanne: Beyond One Million

If I could describe Paco Rabanne in one word, it would be “originality”. I mean, let’s be honest, this guy really has got creativity! Don’t believe me? You’ll see it in a bit. So, why did I choose Rabanne for this week’s post? Simple, because he’s a great designer and most people only have heard of him because of his perfumes: “One Million” and “Lady One Million”; not fair at all.

In order to expose & analyze Rabanne’s works of art, I picked my favorite looks of the Fall- Winter 2012-2013 collection. Are you ready? Here you go! My top three:

Look C

1) Look C.  The third place goes to this black & golden suit. I love the longitude of the blazer, the golden details on the side, and how it opens in the end. Especially the design on the bottom edges of the blazer caught my attention, because it adds a beautiful motion, resembling to the frailty of a butterflies wings. The pants are average black but the belt does add a certain something, plus, do you see what he did with the belt and the blazer’s edges? He’s framing the blouse the… metallic blouse! I mean, those look like coins, right? Who else would have thought of doing such a thing? And in such a striking way? Nobody, nobody, nobody…

Look B

2) Look B.  The second place goes to this leather & metal black blouse and skirt (although it looks like a little black dress, right?). I love the shreds, I just love how they hang all over and the glow of the plastic look they have. The thing about this look is that it uses very conservative patterns but turns them all around! Take a look at the skirt, for example; see the buttons on both sides of it? That’s a classic, but we’re used to it in its regular making, made on regular fabrics. Also, see the neckline detail? That’s the one most of us used as little girls but, oh, wait! It’s made of leather and framed with a super thin metal chain.

Look A

3) Look A.  The first place goes to this black, gray and blue dress. Now, the real question here is, what is it made of? It looks like chips, like those used on board games and casinos. Well, I think it’s a brilliant idea to do something like this: it’s futuristic, it’s unique and reminds me of the dresses used for Charleston. The long V neckline is ideal for stylizing the upper part of the body and the division right at the hips is truly clever because it means any woman would look great in that dress (Yes, any).

Well, what do you think? Next time you hear “Paco Rabanne”, will you go beyond “One Million”? If you do, my work here is done.

Michael Kors: The Fatal Temptation

Last summer I got a job at New York, two hours from what’s better known as “The City”, and I’d go there on every single chance I had, even when it meant waking up at six a.m. and arriving to the little town I was staying at around 12:30 a.m. From the moment I got there, I fell in love with New York City, so I decided to spend my last two days at the U.S. in this wonderful place. During the morning previous to the one I was leaving, I walking around Madison Avenue at my beautiful Manhattan when suddenly, something made me turn my head immediately, any guesses? Well, no, it wasn’t any superstar or gorgeous model, it was this: (Yes, I even took a photo of it.)

I absolutely fell in love with this dress and, I mean, who wouldn’t? The design, as you may notice, belonged to one of the best designers the U.S.A. has brought to the fashion world: Michael Kors.

Look A

I was about, like really about, to give my unconditional love to Michael Kors instead of to my favorite, my one and only, the maison CHANEL (I know, shame on me; but hey! Anyone has its low points!). Then I remembered why it’s called unconditional love, so I decided to stay faithful to La Grande Mademoiselle. Anyway, I remembered the amazement this dress made me feel, so I decided to write about Michael Kors’s Fall-Winter 2012-2013 Ready-To-Wear Collection; ready for the Top 3? Go!

1) Look A. Finally! Somebody designs something that looks like it belongs to the Fall-Winter season! I love the coat; that Scottish pattern makes me feel like Christmas! And the fur unequally distributed makes it look arty but chic. The style is definitely the one of a New Yorker, I could be using that to go to an exhibit to the MoMA. The leather is a basic to Kors, who totally loves to boost the clothing with it, though I’m really hoping those are leather pants and not leather leggings, because there’s nothing more distasteful than using leggings with a blouse instead of grabbing pants, DON’T EVER! The T-Strap pumps are nice, though almost any shoe would do. I know the chemise doesn’t show very well, but it’s got a long V-shaped neckline that matches perfectly the leather and the Scottish pattern.

Look B

2) Look B. The skirt is genius, because it looks like a sort of poncho, which increases the ethnical look that the pattern already gives. The sweater is cool, just a little bit too average and I rarely like knitted stuff, especially when the linen is so thick. The belt is a good touch. The shoes are super nice, make the legs look longer and the feet look thinner.

Look C

3) Look C. This one’s my favorite! The leather blouse is absolutely beautiful! The baggy beginning of the sleeves and the tight end make the arms look thinner, and the pleats on the neckline help the blouse get puffed, which makes the body look slimmer. The trousers are super low rise though shorter (If you’re short don’t wear this kind of trousers unless they’re super low rise and you’re wearing high heels) and the fabric is a great choice because it makes them look more léger. The black Mary Janes are really cute.

As you could see, the favorite colors of Michael Kors are red and black, and even though I love the combination because they’re both very strong colors, they remind me of the flag people use for strikes; maybe when wearing them we’re actually protesting, protesting against looking like everyone else and not standing out; we all deserve to stand out.  Also, they’re very dark colors, a warning of their sinister power to seduce us: try on under your own risk.
